PolyFerm Canada focuses on the development, manufacture, and commercialization of polyhydroxyalkanoates (PHA) – a family of biodegradable bioplastics made from renewable resources. In particular, we specialize in the development of medium-chain-length polyhydroxyalkanoates (MCL-PHA), which we brand as “VersaMer”.
VersaMer PHA is the only type of biodegradable thermoplastic elastomers made from renewable resources such as sugars and vegetable oils. They are semi-crystalline elastomeric materials possessing excellent elongation-at-break, water-resistance, and gas barrier properties. The latex form may be used in coatings and paints. They are also biocompatible, making them great candidates in the fields of biomedical and tissue engineering.
With our proprietary technology, the composition and properties of VersaMer PHAs can be tailored to suit particular research and development requirements. It is our goal to offer the widest possible range of MCL-PHAs to researchers in the bioplastic material fields, and to address the needs for sustainability, biodegradability, and biocompatibility in the polymer industry.
